Real vs. Fake THC Carts and How to Spot Them

We’ve all heard horror stories of unregulated THC carts with harmful substances that threaten the health of unsuspecting users. And for good reason!

Many unregulated carts have been found to contain ingredients associated with multiple respiratory problems, especially when bought at suspiciously cheap prices from dubious sources.

That’s why we’ll go through our tips and tricks to identify fake THC vape carts and how to avoid them.

The Risks of Fake THC Cartridges

Counterfeit cartridges are sold in the black market and prioritize profit over safety, so there’s no regulatory entity ensuring the lack of cutting agents and fillers to make a bigger profit. One notorious example of harmful fillers is Vitamin E acetate, a substance linked to severe lung injuries when inhaled.

Even when they don’t contain fillers, fake THC carts might include heavy metals or low-quality cannabis contaminated with pesticides.

These unknown additives and contaminants can also harbor contaminants that irritate the lungs and potentially cause long-term health problems.

Identifying Authentic vs. Fake THC Cartridges

Here are a few tips and tricks to identify red flags that might indicate you’re dealing with counterfeit products:

Packaging and Branding

Start by looking for a package date, batch number, and manufacturing date. Reputable retailers often make this easy, adding a QR code that, when scanned, links to the manufacturer’s website or a verification page with lab results for that specific batch.

The packaging should display state compliance symbols and mandatory warnings, like state-specific cannabis warning signs or age restrictions. California, for instance, requires a specific THC warning symbol, so look into the compliance symbols in your area and look for those on your package.

Counterfeiters often lack the resources for high-quality packaging, so check for misspellings, grammatical errors, or blurry printing. That being said, wholesale packaging sales have made it very affordable for counterfeiters to get good packaging for fake cartridges, so don’t be fooled just because the packaging is nice.

Visual Inspection

Now that you’ve examined the packaging, examine the cart itself, starting with the oil quality. Authentic cartridges typically contain a golden or light amber-colored oil with a thick, viscous consistency that’s almost solid at room temperature. Darker hues, thin, runny oil, or excessive air bubbles are red flags.

Look for signs of leaking, discoloration, or inconsistent branding, too. Knock-offs may be poorly constructed with loose fittings or unreliable heating elements.

Pricing and Purchase Sources

THC vape cartridges involve production costs and quality control measures, which elevates the final price. If you find carts at unusually low prices, you might be dealing with a fake product.

To ensure you’re not getting fake vape cartridges, only buy cartridges from licensed dispensaries or authorized retailers with a proven track record and avoid unverified online sources or street vendors.

When in doubt, always err on the side of caution. If a cart or vape pen looks like it might be fake, toss it out. Your health is far more important.

Common Signs of Fake Vape Carts

Here are some common tell-tell signs that you might be dealing with counterfeit THC products:

  • Unpleasant or Chemical Aftertaste: Real carts should deliver a smooth, clean taste or a flavor consistent with the labeled strain. If you experience a burnt plastic taste, a metallic tang, or any harsh chemical aftertaste, it heavily indicates you have a low-quality counterfeit vape.
  • Persistent Coughing and Irritation: Counterfeit cannabis vapes often contain irritants or harmful additives that can inflame the lungs and airways, leading to a persistent cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, and other similar health issues.
  • Nausea, Dizziness, and Disorientation: Fake cartridges may be laced with unknown substances that can cause various adverse side effects, including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headaches, or a general feeling of unease.
  • Unpredictable Highs: The psychoactive effects of THC are well-documented. However, counterfeit cartridges may contain unpredictable levels of THC or even synthetic cannabinoids that can lead to feelings of intense anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, or extreme lethargy.

Note: These physical reactions are not a definitive way to diagnose fake cartridges. If you experience any of these symptoms after using a THC cartridge, seek immediate medical attention.

How to Ensure You’re Getting a Real THC Cartridge

If you want to make sure you purchase legitimate cannabis products, never purchase THC cartridges from unlicensed vendors or unknown online sources. Instead, always go for licensed dispensaries with strict quality control measures and regulations.

Look for cartridges with lab test results readily available and easy to access. Dispensaries should be able to provide certificates of analysis (COAs) upon request, which detail the cannabinoid profile, terpene content, and absence of contaminants.
