Silicone Bongs
Everyone loves a good glass bong, but they’re not always the best choice for portability and durability. Silicone bongs offer an affordable, less fragile alternative to glass, and there’s a wide variety of styles to choose from!
What Is A Silicone Bong?
A silicone bong is like a traditional glass bong but made of BPA-free food-grade silicone. It is a type of water pipe that smokers use to filter and cool the smoke before inhalation.
Parts Of A Silicone Bong
Generally speaking, most silicone bongs will have the same main parts.
- Base: Usually wide and flat, the base is typically heavy to stabilize the bong and prevent it from tipping. There’s nothing as gross as stinky bong water everywhere if you accidentally knock your bong over!
- Downstem: This is a removable tube that channels smoke from the bowl through the water as you inhale.
- Bowl: The heat-resistant glass bowl is where you pack your dry herb.
- Mouthpiece: That’s where your mouth goes for you to inhale the smoke.
- Percolator: Some bongs have a perc which is an extra filtration device in the bong.
- Ash Catcher: Some bongs also have an ash catcher to keep things nice and neat.
Benefits of a Silicone Bong
So why would you pick a silicone bong over glass or wood?
Durability
Silicone bongs are designed to be virtually indestructible. They will suit those that frequently travel with their smoking accessories. They will also suit smokers that are often clumsy with their bongs and at higher risk of shattering them.
Aesthetics
Glass bongs are commonly used, so your bong will undoubtedly stand out with brightly colored silicone!
Price
Although their price can vary widely, silicone bongs generally tend to be cheaper than their glass counterparts.
How To Clean A Silicone Bong
To maintain the performance of your silicone bong and optimize your smoking experience, you’ll need to clean it routinely:
- Gather cleaning supplies: Prepare hot water, 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol or a commercial cleaning solution, coarse salt or rice, and pipe cleaners or brushes.
- Empty the water: Start by emptying any water or residue from the bong and rinse it with warm water.
- Disassemble: Most bongs have detachable parts like the downstem, bowl, and mouthpiece for easy cleaning.
- Rinse: Rinse the bong and all the parts with warm water.
- Prep some cleaning solution: Fill a sturdy plastic bag or container large enough to submerge the bong in isopropyl alcohol. Add salt or rice to act as an abrasive to remove stubborn residue.
- Soak: Put the bong and all the detachable parts into the bag or container. Soak for one to two hours, but leave it overnight for best results if you have the time.
- Scrub: After soaking, use pipe cleaners or brushes to scrub the inside to tackle any leftover buildup. Pay particular attention to hard-to-reach places like edges and corners.
- Rinse Thoroughly: You’re almost done! After scrubbing, rinse the bong and all the parts thoroughly and repeatedly with warm water to remove the salt, rice, or alcohol.
- Dry: Wipe the bong and all the parts down with a clean towel and let it air dry.
